1. Gearbox trouble

The most expensive Highlander problem. Signs: harsh or late shifts, slipping, flaring revs between gears, or a delay into Drive. The usual cause on tokunbo cars is gearbox oil (ATF) that was never changed. Change it on schedule. If it's already slipping, get a proper diagnosis and a second opinion before agreeing to a used gearbox.

2. Water pump leaks

The V6 (2GR) water pump is a common leak point. Watch for coolant crust near the front of the engine and a dropping coolant level. Left alone, it leads to overheating. See car overheating.

3. Brakes and shocks wear fast

A heavy, seven-seat SUV in Lagos traffic eats brake pads and discs, and potholes wear the shocks. A shaking steering wheel under braking usually means the discs. See car shaking when braking and shock absorber prices.

4. AC faults

Highlanders have a big cabin to cool, and many have a rear AC unit too, with its own pipes that can leak. Check for leaks and low gas before replacing the compressor. See car AC repair costs.

5. Power steering leaks

A whine when turning or red fluid under the front often means a leaking pump or hose. Pumps are about ₦26,000 to ₦50,000.

6. Oil leaks on the V6

Like the Lexus RX 350, the V6 Highlander can leak oil from the valve timing oil line on some earlier models, or from the timing cover with age. Oil spots or a burning smell need checking.

Questions drivers ask

Is the Toyota Highlander good for Nigerian roads?

Yes. It's reliable and parts are easy to find in Lagos. It shares its V6 engine with the Lexus RX 350 and some Camrys, so most mechanics know it well.

How much is a Highlander gearbox in Nigeria?

Used gearboxes on Jiji cost about ₦900,000 to ₦1,350,000 for 2005 to 2013 models and around ₦4,000,000 for 2017 to 2021, before fitting.

Why does my Highlander go through brake pads so fast?

It's a heavy SUV and Lagos traffic means constant braking. Pads for one axle cost about ₦40,000 to ₦55,000. Smooth braking and keeping a safe distance help them last.

How much is a Highlander water pump?

About ₦70,000 to ₦90,000 for the V6 from Lagos sellers. Hybrid inverter pumps cost about ₦130,000 to ₦150,000.
