Quick answer
The check engine light means your car's computer has found a fault and stored a code. A steady light is usually safe to drive on for a short time, but get the code read soon. A flashing light means a serious misfire: slow down and stop driving as soon as it's safe.
Common causes range from a loose fuel cap (₦0) to a catalytic converter (₦190,000 and up).
Light flashing?
Stop driving as soon as it's safe. A flashing check engine light means fuel isn't burning properly in one or more cylinders. Keep driving and the unburnt fuel can overheat and destroy the catalytic converter, one of the most expensive parts on the car.
Common causes and what the parts cost
| Cause | Part price (Toyota, Lexus) |
|---|---|
| Loose or worn fuel cap | ₦0 if it just needs tightening |
| Worn spark plugs | ₦10,000 – ₦15,000 |
| Faulty ignition coil (one cylinder) | ₦15,000 – ₦22,000 |
| Oxygen (O2) sensor | ₦35,000 – ₦60,000 |
| Mass air flow sensor | ₦20,000 – ₦70,000 |
| Catalytic converter | ₦190,000 – ₦600,000 |
What to do when the light comes on
- Check the fuel cap. Tighten it until it clicks. The light can take a few days of driving to go off.
- Notice how the car feels. Shaking, loss of power, a smell or higher fuel use all help narrow it down.
- Get the code read. A mechanic plugs an OBD2 scanner into the port under the dashboard and gets a code like P0420 or P0301.
- Send the code to Clutch. You'll get what it means in plain English, the likely fix and the price range, before you agree to anything.
Don't just clear the code
Some workshops "reset" the light and send you off. The fault is still there and the light will come back. Clearing it also wipes the information that helps find the real cause. Ask what the code was before anything is cleared, and write it down.
What the common codes mean
- P0300 to P0306: misfire. Often spark plugs or an ignition coil.
- P0420: catalytic converter efficiency is low. Sometimes it's really a bad O2 sensor, so check that first.
- P0171: engine running lean. Often a vacuum leak or a dirty mass air flow sensor.
- P0455 or P0442: leak in the fuel vapour system. Often the fuel cap.
Questions drivers ask
Can I drive with the check engine light on?
If the light is steady and the car drives normally, you can usually drive carefully for a short time, but get the code read soon. If it's flashing, stop driving as soon as it's safe to avoid damaging the catalytic converter.
How much does it cost to fix a check engine light in Nigeria?
It depends on the cause. A loose fuel cap costs nothing, an ignition coil is about ₦15,000 to ₦22,000, an oxygen sensor about ₦35,000 to ₦60,000 and a catalytic converter ₦190,000 or more, plus labour.
Will the check engine light go off by itself?
Sometimes, if the fault was temporary, like a loose fuel cap. If the fault is still there, the light stays on or comes back.
What is P0420?
P0420 means the catalytic converter isn't cleaning the exhaust as well as it should. Before replacing the converter, check the oxygen sensors and fix any misfires, because they can trigger the same code.
