Quick answer
A car that shakes when braking usually has uneven or warped brake discs. Other causes are a sticking brake caliper, worn suspension parts or a bad wheel bearing.
Discs can sometimes be skimmed instead of replaced. New discs cost about ₦50,000 to ₦170,000 each for common Toyotas.
Safety first
If the shaking is violent, the car pulls hard to one side, or you smell burning after driving, stop and get it checked before driving further. A seized caliper or a failing wheel bearing can get dangerous quickly.
Common causes and what the parts cost
| Cause | Part price (Toyota) |
|---|---|
| Brake discs, Corolla | ₦50,000 – ₦150,000 |
| Brake discs, Camry | ₦80,000 – ₦170,000 |
| Brake caliper | ₦65,000 – ₦160,000 |
| Caliper repair kit | around ₦30,000 |
| Tie rod end | ₦20,000 – ₦40,000 |
| Ball joint | ₦18,000 – ₦40,000 |
| Wheel bearing (hub) | ₦60,000 – ₦95,000 |
How to tell which one it is
- Steering wheel shakes only when braking: most often the front brake discs.
- Brake pedal pulses under your foot: also discs, front or rear.
- Car pulls to one side and one wheel is very hot after driving: a sticking caliper.
- Clunks or wobble over bumps too, not just braking: worn tie rod ends, ball joints or bushes.
- Humming or grinding that gets louder with speed: often a wheel bearing.
- Shaking at high speed even without braking: usually wheel balance or a damaged tyre. Start there.
Skim or replace the discs?
If the discs are still thick enough, they can be skimmed (machined flat) for much less than new ones. If they're below the minimum thickness stamped on the disc, or cracked, they must be replaced. Ask the mechanic to measure them. Change discs in pairs on the same axle, and fit new pads with them.
Why discs warp
Heavy braking that overheats them, like hard stops in Lagos traffic or coming down long hills, then sitting with the foot hard on the brake. Wheel nuts tightened unevenly can also cause it. Smooth braking makes discs last longer.
Questions drivers ask
Why does my steering wheel shake when I brake?
Most often because the front brake discs are uneven. They can sometimes be skimmed flat, or replaced if they're too thin.
Is it safe to drive if my car shakes when braking?
Mild shaking from discs is usually safe for a short time, but get it checked soon because braking gets worse. Violent shaking, pulling or a burning smell means stop and get help.
How much does it cost to fix shaking when braking in Nigeria?
Skimming discs is the cheapest fix. New discs cost about ₦50,000 to ₦170,000 each for common Toyotas, and a caliper ₦65,000 to ₦160,000, plus labour.
Do I need new pads with new discs?
Yes. Old pads have worn to the shape of the old discs. Fit new pads whenever discs are skimmed or replaced.
