Quick answer

The problems Camry owners in Nigeria see most are oil burning on some 2007 to 2009 four-cylinder engines, water pump leaks, AC failures, worn shocks and brakes and, on cars with old gearbox oil, gearbox trouble.

Most fixes cost ₦15,000 to ₦200,000 in parts. A gearbox is the big one, from about ₦700,000.

1. Burning oil (2007 to 2009, 2.4 litre)

Some 2007 to 2009 Camrys with the 2.4 litre four-cylinder engine (2AZ) are known to use oil between services. Toyota acknowledged the issue at the time. Check the dipstick every week or two and top up. Running low damages the engine fast.

2. Water pump leaks and overheating

A slow coolant leak from the water pump is a common Camry job. Watch for coolant drops under the front of the engine, a sweet smell, or the temperature gauge creeping up. See car overheating: causes and costs.

3. AC stops cooling

Low gas from a leak, a blocked condenser or a weak fan are common before the compressor itself. See car AC repair costs.

4. Shocks, suspension and brakes

Camrys are heavy, and Lagos roads are hard on them. Knocking over bumps, bouncing and a shaking steering wheel under braking are all common. See shock absorber prices and car shaking when braking.

5. Gearbox trouble

Harsh or late gear changes, slipping, or a delay when you select Drive. Old gearbox oil (ATF) that was never changed is a common cause on tokunbo cars. Changing it on time is far cheaper than a gearbox. If it's already slipping, get a second opinion before paying for a swap.

6. Sticky or melting dashboard (2007 to 2011)

On some 2007 to 2011 Camrys, the dashboard top can go sticky, shiny or soft in strong heat. It's cosmetic, but a dash cover helps in the Nigerian sun.

7. Misfires

A rough idle, shaking at a standstill or a flashing check engine light often means a spark plug or ignition coil. Coils are cheap, from about ₦11,500. See check engine light.

Questions drivers ask

Is the Toyota Camry good for Nigerian roads?

Yes. It's comfortable, reliable and parts are easy to find in Lagos. Most problems come from skipped maintenance on tokunbo cars, so service records matter when buying.

Why is my Camry burning oil?

Some 2007 to 2009 Camrys with the 2.4 litre engine are known for it. Older high-mileage engines can also use oil. Check the dipstick often and get a mechanic to check for leaks or worn rings.

How much is a Camry gearbox in Nigeria?

Used gearboxes on Jiji cost about ₦700,000 to ₦1,500,000 for 2012 to 2016 models and around ₦2,500,000 for 2018 and newer, before fitting. Older 2.4 litre gearboxes can be found from about ₦350,000.

How much is a Camry water pump?

Around ₦20,500 for 2003 to 2009 models and ₦60,500 for 2010 to 2017 from Lagos sellers. Electric or hybrid pumps cost ₦180,000 to ₦280,000.
